Have you seen the prices for the new Idrisi32 lab kits?

I have been looking at them recently and am very disturbed - bang goes the
view that Idrisi is A) affordable and B) of benefit to the community.

For the first time, at Leicester, we are looking at running Idrisi in a
large lab - 50 machines.

We will be using it with our first year class of 120 students +, and need
for teaching efficiency to work with 50 students at a time.

We are also going over to Windows 2000, but cannot abandon the legacy Idrisi
for Dos users in other departments, and so cannot get an upgrade on our
current lab kit license.

The lab kit prices for Idrisi32 mean that we will be charged $12,500 for a
set of licenses! ($2,500 base prices plus 40 x $250) - notice we get
manuals with the 10 basic seats but none with the 40 extra seats.

At present I cannot recommend this deal to the University or my colleagues
who will now have to waste a great deal of time changing over practicals to
Arc View and the like.

Notice that in the UK we have a SITE LICENSE for ESRI products for which the
base price is 3,500 GBP (about $8,000) with options beyond that - a site
license for less than the price of Idrisi32 for 50 users.

Since Idrisi went into the lab kit business, some of us have asked why they
do not do site licenses.

Is no one else teaching large lab classes who has to face these sorts of
prices?

I will be ordering my personal copy of Idrisi32 tomorrow however, it looks
like a really interesting product with lots of now and interesting
functions.
