Dear Prof. Fisher and Idrisi-l:
Since the Idrisi Project has not initially included lab kit upgrade
pricing on its web page, I telephoned to find out what the cost would be
to upgrade our 35 seat lab of Idrisi for Windows v.2.
A 10 seat lab kit upgrade from v2 to v32 will cost $1000 US rather than
the previous $475 to go from v1 to v2. Upgrading additional seats will be
$100 each. This represents a substantial increase, and it makes
maintaining Idrisi almost as expensive as our academic licensing for ESRI
and PCI software.
Incidentally, Idrisi Project staff also said that v32 is still only
"coming soon," perhaps late August, so I would hold on to your money for
the moment. Hopefully the developers take their time so that: (1) Idrisi
for Windows version 3 becomes truly Windows-based; and (2) we are not
faced with an upgrade, like that from v1 to v2, simply because of serious
bugs with printing, etc.
Given that some faculty have invested a good deal of time preparing
lectures and labs around Idrisi, we will likely purchase the upgrade,
budget permitting, but not for the 1999-2000 academic year.
