Shaddow casting, particularly over small plot forest cuts (subsistence
farmed areas) surrounded by tall canopy, and via hill shading, do pose a
major problem and must be counteracted or accounted for.

You may want to read through Frederick Portigal's work posted in a paper on
"Rio Platano Biosphere Intrusion Analysis Using Hyperspectral Linear Mixing
Models, La Mosquita, Honduras" for clues and methodology, at his website
(this paper was first published in 1996 at the 26th International Symposium
on Remote Sensing of Environment, in Vancouver, British Columbia). This is
not a deciduous situation, but tropical canopy, though the technique is the
same...
