The "heuristic" here is that a 5xx ESMTP response means that the recipient is rejecting email from the sender, I believe. It's not really an obscure bit of existing practice, rather it's both "best" and "common". Once we're at the point where we're describing that as something that can safely be ignored if we want to then I have to wonder what mail system we're planning to layer all this stuff on top of.
