What about upgrading rpm to 3.05 ?
I remember reading something about that from linux-il. Never tried it...
Another possible solution: rebuild the rpm packages from srpms. The spec
file may need some editing, to remove some newly-introduced macros. I can
help a bit with such issues.

Also: is RH7 considered stable enough? There was a recent round of glibc
updates recently. But I don't follow redhat that closely.
