I strongly recommend we upgrade to RedHat 7.1. The reason for that is that
most of our packages are quite out-of-date and may have security breaches
in them. In order to upgrade using the RPMs or the Source RPMs we need the
most up-to-date version of RPM - 4.0.x. The latter does not compile
cleanly out of its source (at least not the last time I checked) and its
RPM is in version 4.x format, too.
The best way to ensure easy maintainability is to upgrade to RH 7.1 which
supports the new RPM format. It will also save us some trouble because it
already comes with newer packages. And I did not hear too many horror
stories about RH 7.1, so installing it should be OK.
The other alternative is to install everything from the source tar.gz, but
it would be more painful because the RH distro configures things
differntly from their default.
I can go to Actcom someday and supervise the installation. If anybody else
is willing to do that, contact me in advance by E-mail or cell-phone
(051-541831). But first I need everybody's agreement.
