Gentlemen,
We have to face 2 facts:
o the server is not ours, nor the link - they are provided to us
by Ligad, Compaq and Actcom. We have, therefore, to fulfill all
requirements brought upon us by those bodies.
One of those requirements is using RH distro - since this is what
is sold by Compaq.
o Neither current state of RH ( rh 7.1 ) nor of kernel ( 2.4.6 and
no 2.5.x branch open ) are ready for being used in a autonomous
production system.
RH 7.1 is not ready in particular - it demands reinstall of many
packets with "newer" versions.
rpm binary that comes with RH 7.1, for example, has a spectacular
flaw - when trying to relocate packages while installing them,
the whole tree is installed into one! file ( see bug #49023 )
Others bugs that are found in that release are certainly pop up
when trying to operate a server.
Most of those bugs are said to be fixed in RawHide, i.e. should enter
RH 7.2
The conclusion I come to while facing those 2 facts is that we:
1. Can not install any other distro but RH ( although many people
here, including myself, would prefer Debian )
and
2. Should not install RH 7.1, but wait until RH 7.2 will come out.
Alternatively, RH 7.1 may be installed, with all bugged packages
reinstalled. The problem with second approach is that we do not
have any facility to unit test those bugs and to verify that we
get a _stable_ distribution.
Best regards,
