ok, how about this: we have about 4GB free under the /iglu directory. 
since we don't mirror ISOs, but rather copy then manually, we could place 
the ISO images under /iglu - provided we can make them available from the 
ftp server - with it being chrooted and all.

any objects, or suggestions as to how to make these files reachable from 
the /iglu partition via the ftp server?
