We (excluding Lior and Amit) had this discussion before: http://www.mail-archive.com/iglu-web%40iglu.org.il/msg01243.html FTP has some advantages over plain HTTP (wildcards operations mainly), and may be necessary until WebDAV (which is an HTTP-based protocol that gives the same operations) becomes more common. We could take the necessary steps to have WebDAV up and running as well, and still keep the FTP service for people who use it. A few problems with FTP are mentioned in the thread. I still believe it's necessary at this point.
