Having spent 5 hours trying to figure out a problem I was having with my
IIS5 Windows 2000 Server.

Problem : IIS kept failing, CPU running at 100%. Reboot the server and it
would stay steady for a time (from seconds to minutes) then back up to 100%
where it would stay forever.

I stopped the web service and started a single site on the box. What I
didn't realise was when I was starting this single site it was actually
starting ALL sites (I eventually clicked refresh on the window view and
noticed this.....this seems like a BUG to me, never had that happen before).

Anyway, eventually, I managed to stop all other sites by starting them all
and then PAUSING the sites I didn't want to run. I managed to get it stable
with just a few sites running, I started another site and the CPU went to
100%. Restarted IIS and tried browsing to the site manually, only partly
came up and 100% showing on server. Thought I'd have a look in the log file
to see what was going on and noticed the file was 0 bytes, so I deleted the
file and restarted IIS. Since then everything has been working perfectly.

So, next time you have 100% cpu usage you can't work out, check for
blank/corrupt logfiles!

Neil
