Gtalk uses the Jabber protocol. I use Gaim(now Pidgin). Add a new account.
select the jabber protocol. enter your gmail id (the part before the '@' in full id) as screen name. enter "gmail.com" as server example: Protocol: jabber screen name: john.mccain server: gmail.com password: ******** local alias: john Voila!!!
