Hi Rajeev alsaconf has always worked for me (unless the kernel has an issue with it). Are you doing this on a laptop? Does this concern you: http://lug-iitd.org/Articles/Debian_Help#Configuring_sound_for_Certain_Laptops
Some people have reported earlier that the correct driver doesn't get loaded for them and finally they blacklisted the wrong ones. Does trying a newer kernel help?
