You should try fixing the graphical login problem first. I think the
screensaver thing might start normally afterwards (may be kde isn't
starting properly). From what you said, it reaffirms that Knoppix uses
kdm (not gdm). gdmsetup wouldn't help you. See if the following works.

1. When you see the prompt, without starting X type (as root)
    # telinit 3
    # telinit 5
2. Your graphical prompt should appear now. If it does, that probably
means that your computer is booting up to runlevel 3 (which is without
graphical prompt). To change that, edit /etc/inittab (as root) and set
the default bootup runlevel to 5. From inittab's manpage, that line
would look something like this
    id:2:initdefault:
    (change the 2 (or whatever) to 5).

In case your graphical prompt still doesn't appear, hopefully
something usefully should appear somewhere. See if there are any
instances of X running (try ctrl+alt+f1, f2 etc..).
