Ubuntu 8.04 has had a problem with setting up the network graphically. I wonder if you are having the same problem. Just to verify that the settings are being applied. Run "/sbin/ifconfig" in a terminal to make sure that the IP address has been setup. "/sbin/route -n" for the gateway and "cat /etc/resolv.conf".
