Now this explanation of your problem seems very helpful :) You probably corrupted some session related files for GNOME (I am guessing you use that). One simple way out of this fix is that if you have no special desktop settings, jsut delete ".gnome2" directory in your home directory (is this correct? someone please verify this). You won't lose your data/bookmarks. You can delete it by (from CUI) $ rm -rf ~/.gnome2 Try logging in graphically then. Hopefully, everything should work out fine.
