Here is a interesting case study by Mr Gaurav Paliwal, 3nd year
student of USIT Delhi college. It is quite visible now that if
university give projects to students rather then throwing tendors,
they can save a lot of money.
Case Study 1 : Off-Campus Resource Sharing
========================================
In this projects, student have implemented a Off-campus
resource sharing system by which teacher can browser many e-books of
their library from home too.
from his blog
"UIRC provides access to 6500+ e-journals, ----- In this, the
publisher(s) authorises range of IP address(s) for the university. Any
user of the university from Kashmere Gate campus has unlimited access
to all these e-resources. --- BUT --- as university is not residential
faculty members before and after office hours do not have access.
-------- One way out is to do this using propriety software but that
would have cost around 8 lacs excluding the maintenance and that too
for the small libraries which have limited users around 2000.For a big
library it could have cost around 15 Lacs per annum.At the end UIRC
has delivered that project to us and we have managed to complete that
with in 10 days instead of the deadline that is 60 days with only one
guy involved in that."

Case Study 2 : Institutional Repository
================================
from his blog " UIRC at GGSIPU (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha
University) want to implement the Institutional Repository that
provides the tools or management of digital assets. Although on the
other hand they need something to supports a wide variety of data,
including books, theses, 3D digital scans of objects, photographs,
film, video, research data sets and other forms of content and also
that the data should be arranged as community collections of items,
which bundle bitstreams together ------------------- We can clearly
see here that any university can save about Rs.1.5 lacs on deployment
and about Rs. 75 k on the AMC per year by involving student into their
own projects i.e. Using their student as their own resources. We have
completed this project within 15 days with 2 peoples (me and Deepak)
involved in this"
