Why are you people getting involved in Scilab?................Use Octave.
All the Matlab scripts and functions will work perfectly fine without any
change(even in .m extension) unless some toolbox specific functions are
used. In Scilab the Matlab .m files would first get converted into
.sci(native format of Scilab) files. In this step itself, there may be some
problems about compatibility. Then there are differences in syntax ranging
from subtle to major resulting you to learn some new things. Anyway, now
Scilab also is an open source software and is considered a good substitute
for Matlab. I would recommend all Matlab users connected with IITDLUG to
give a try to Octave for which one would have to install GnuOctave for the
basic software and QtOctave for a good Matlab like front end. Both the
softwares can be easily installed using synaptic package manager on Ubuntu
by just clicking check boxes in Add-Remove program. Anyone already using
Octave is welcome to share his or her experience.
