I had a similar problem . Try to right click on volume option at top right
corner screen. You should be seeing a option for Mixer. Try to use all
possible configurations in mixer available. I used it that ways and it works
because it was not selected as default device.

Also check whether UBUNTU has disabled this drivers or not. Sometimes
drivers which are proprietary they need to be enabled before they are used
for system . IT was problem with Broadcom lan card of dell studio 1535.
