Coming back to branding issues-- Linux is a recognizable word/name-- which even uneducated OR semi-educated people OR decision makers who are not IT literate-- can recognize-- and that recognizability is the key to branding. If one says GNU-- one has to explain-- the story... And if one says "Libre"-- then one has to give example-- "Like Linux...". If one says Linux-- many people already know that it is a free operating system. And even without saying Linux-- many people can recognize the penguin logo. Some weeks back-- Narendra and I were standing in a stall-- promoting a (Free Educational Packages+OS) stack by knowledge commons-- and we were talking-to and distributing CDs/DVDs to school principals and school managers from all over India. The above stack was based on Solaris-- rather than Linux. And people were asking-- what is the underlying motive ? Whenever we would say "free" or "non-proprietary"--- principals and school managers would ask "like Linux ?". That's the reason I said-- lets stick to Linux-- not even GNU/Linux-- since it is better to keep things simple-- and focus on producing tangible results. What say ?
