I would suggest you install wicd (available in synaptic package manager on Ubuntu). I accidentally installed it and it replaced the network manager applet. Since I don't know the name of the original nm applet, I simply kept this one. I am guessing it provides the same functionality (since I see the same menus on right-clicking) and it sits the panel.
