if nothing works just delete setting and configuration files from Home
directory to get default gnome/kde desktop and panel.
follow these steps
~ log out your graphical session
~ press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to login
~ give command "rm -rf .*" (to delete setting and configuration files, you
may backup .mozilla or whatever you want)
~ restore your backup e.g .mozilla
~ logout
~ now press Ctrl+alt+F7 to login again in graphical session
~ now you can see fresh new default desktop
