Coool ! Maybe you should kickstart by learning how to develop  a bootloader
and work towards other aspects of operating system in due course of time.
You can find some useful information at
http://wiki.osdev.org/Rolling_Your_Own_Bootloader, and as Nilesh mentioned
you can use linuxfromscratch as a quick learning tool for building custom
Linux distributions.
