Were you able to use it as a USB too? I think not.
With the newer version of drivers it detects the USB but doesn't do a
mode switch automatically as it was doing previously. Now with this
you should be able to use it both as a memory stick and modem.

I had come across a better page, while getting my tata photon up on
Kubuntu 10.04,  but seem to have lost the site (or was it kubuntu
forums?).

This is partially correct, I believe, it shouldn't just "switch", it
should kind of "enable".
