@Tanay: Can you just delete everything else first and then just post
your reply? Don't know if that's easy on a phone.

Repeating what others have already stated. The problem would be that
most customers may have files in easily renderable/open-able formats
on Linux and they'll get inferior prints that way. As of now, you
can't convince everybody to use Linux in a hostel. Just like there are
staunch FOSS supporters there, there are also staunch non-FOSS
supporters.

Also, most of the times I've seen them running some very old hardware
PC (cost-effective). Only some version of linux which has minimal
(CPU/memory) requirements would work. You can't install an old version
and expect them to be happy with it. They won't be. Ubuntu 10.10 might
be an easy desktop OS replacement but a lot has evolved from Ubuntu
8.10 to Ubuntu 10.10.
