I think what Vaibhav is trying to suggest is defining "processes"
(involving but beyond "IT technologies" like may be mailing lists or
drupal or internal chat software?) to streamline things that a
business organization does [on a day to day basis]. Think of them as
widely accepted (though I seldom see the point myself) of software
development process like waterfall model [1] or agile model [2]. IMHO,
one of the reasons for doing something on these lines is to be able to
quantify several parameters (and those define *efficiency*) in
business practices (or software development process).

For example, once you start collecting statistics on how long it takes
you to do type A projects, it will help you predict how long it would
take to do another type-A-like project in the future (such figures
help businesses to predict expected costs and thus plan accordingly).

This is not my area of study/interest and above comparison with
software development process is speculative at best.
