I encountered with the same problem in my house last weekend. I connected my DSL modem to Laptop and got internet connection to it. Now I wanted to share that connection with my desktop so I plugged in a USB to RJ45 converter on my Laptop and luckily Ubuntu 10.04 detected it. I fired up Firestart a firewall program for Ubuntu and went through the configuration wizard to share the internet connection from ppp0 to eth2. Wola both my computers were connected with internet.
