My 2 more cents. Talk to your lab technician or responsible authority
and install linux on one computer to start with him. Your goal should
be to impress/woo him rather than showing signatures to an HoD. If you
can convince your lab techie, I am sure you can coordinate with him
and have dual boot on most/all systems. I think this is a more
pragmatic approach.

Don't give him any bullshit about greatness of linux and open source
to start with. Personal experience says that telling others that your
OS is better turns their interest off because you are telling them
that what they have used so far is bad. Be diplomatic. Call it an
experiment or whatever. Tell him that you want to learn using linux or
whatever. Let him discover the benefits AFTER you have crossed the
first hurdle of installing linux on one computer.
