Asking permissions for many machines for installing Linux distros may be turned down.
Ask for a single machine. Install any Linux distribution on it. Create users for each student. Now you can ssh into that machine by using Putty or SSH Client from other Windows systems in the lab (I hope that the lab is networked !). Even a normal 32 bit Pentium 4 machine with 1-2 GB RAM will be enough for about 100-200 students compiling usual lab syllabus programs in gcc.
