I mentioned linux as i was comparing alternatives with windows in the
discussion.

If you want me to talk specifically about FOSS, then i would like to pick
"firefox".

My first response to Narendra's post was:

*"As long as FOSS alternatives are*
*not as feature rich and easier to use as MS products, average user
won't shift even if they agree with your MS bashing.

Its not lack of knowledge of FOSS which is helping MS, but
*
*non-availability of equally good, ready to use and feature rich
alternatives."*
*
*
Why do people prefer Firefox over internet explorer? Is it just because it
is free and open source?
No, instead because it offers more features than IE, is more secure and
reliable, is faster and bla bla.

So the deciding factor is features and performance, and not just being
FOSS. So many of the firefox users won't even know what's FOSS. Same is the
case with VLC vs windows media player.

People would consider the FOSS factor "more" when alternatives are at least
as good as the proprietary options. Both Chromium and Chrome browsers are
based on the Chrome project and have almost identical features. But the
chrome has more google integration into it, which many don't like as they
don't want them to track their activities. So, as they have an alternative
with almost identical features, they can use chromium browser.

I was not writing against FOSS in my posts, but instead was highlighting
the fact that they need more improvements. I'm a FOSS supporter and try to
use them as much as i can. But i do use proprietary software if FOSS
alternatives are not good enough for my requirement.
