When I first started at Champaign, the Champaign yard office (twice
removed from the present one) had read-out machines for the Tolono and
Ludlow detectors. These were read by the Champaign carmen. When the
suspect train reached Champaign, the carmen examined the train. The Tolono
one read just on the northbound track and the Ludlow one read just the
southbound track. Later, these read-out machines were moved to 223 N.
Michigan Avenue in Chicago along with all the other read-out machines at
MAIN Central office. Several people read the tapes system-wide and used
the radio to talk to any trains that had a possible defect.

Terry.
