In the late seventies and early eighties some roads used
pen brush recorders to read hot box information. The hot box
detector would send its results to a pen recorder located in a
near by tower. The tower operator would read the tape looking
for spikes that indicated a hot box. The operator relayed this
information to the train crew via radio.
