you should always add the newly compiled kernel as a separate
section in the lilo.conf file so that you can boot back into the old
working kernel should things go down the drain. For example, when I
press [TAB] at the lilo boot: prompt, I am presented with 16
bootable kernel images to choose from.

In this case, however, the last message printed when the kernel
boots is important.  Try to capture that and post onto the list.
