Hi,
I'm really surprised that a company like Compaq makes systems with 2
assumptions -
1. Their customers will/can use Win9x ONLY.
2. Their customers are idiots!

Last night I went over to Dwaipayans place to install Linux.Well, I booted
into the yellow 'n white PCQ CD ROM and started the installation process.I
ran fdisk from Linux and partitioned his hdd.Everything went OK,bar a few
glitches due to lack of information. Today I went over in the morning and
he told me that he had installed windows on the remaining partition from a
'QuickRestore' CD provided by Compaq. He said he couldn't see Linux
anymore.I explained that it was still there,I'd just have to run LILO and
everything would be OK.When I ran explorer from Windows I see that
apparently the QuickRestore program had *wiped out* all partitions (there
were 3 - 500MB Linux Native , 64MB Linux Swap and the remaining ~1.4GB for
Win) and taken the whole drive for itself.

Steady,I told myself.Maybe I shouldn't have used the Linux fdisk first.So
I then booted from a floppy into DOS,partitioned the drive using dos'es
fdisk giving 1.3GB for windows and not touching the remaining space. We
then ran the QuickRestore CD again. What would one expect - the program
should see only 1.3GB space and install all s/w into that. But NO!!! It
decides to take the whole 2.1GB for itself.Apparently this program will
not allow any partitions to be made on the drive. From what I see it will
also take up all the space on any hard drive in the system (ie if there
are two separate drives it will use both of them for installing Windows
and associated Compaq software.

Maybe I've missed something.But I don't think so.What I think is that this
is an simply an abuse of a persons intelligence.OK.Even after all this I
decided that may be we don't need the QuickRestore program - lets install
windows and the required drivers by hand.So I looked on the CD for a
setup.exe (in the directory containing the Win .cab files) but there was
nothing.Apparently everything is controlled by the QuickRestore
program. The only other option is to install Win95 from another CD and then
install the drivers one by one by hand. What the hell?

I am amazed that a company like Compaq could write such egotistic, brain
dead software.Do they think that all there customers are morons like
them. What is the problem in giving windows separately from the install
program.windows installation is a joke, so make the drivers installation
automated.Do what you want, but how dare they hijack a partitioned hdd in
this manner - the whole process implies that if you use QuickRetsore you
can only use Windows. Can anybody help out in this case? Can anybody give
an address where I can send a 'nuclear flame to Compaq?

I am pissed as hell - computers should be easy to use for the laymen, but
not at the cost of interference for people who want to *get into* their
system.

Bye,
Rajarshi
