Dear Rajarshi,
What has happened with the QuickRestore CD on Dwaipayan's machine is not an
uncommon event to take place.... Saptak had this experience with his Win98
CD and so have quite a few other people I know. It is rather arrogant, if
nothing else, for an OS to presume that it is going to be the only occupant
of HDD....but such is life (with M$)
The fdisk util from M$ doesn't even allow you to create more than 1 primary
partition, it cannot classify itself as software, in fact it is
*crippleware*.

Till recently Compaq used to be the largest PC manufacturer in the world,
and the during the DoJ anti-trust suit against MSFT, it has been heard that
MSFT had been arm-twisting Compaq as well as other vendors. IIUC, the
QuickRestore is basically a customized wrapper around the Win9x setup
program that has been "optimized" to work with the Presario 4540, and
screw-up everything else.
The Presario 4540 was one the first sub-$1000 mark PCs from Compaq.....it
is not really a good model. AFAIK, it has 2 ISA slots and one ISA/PCI
combo, a teeny-weeny 2.1 Gig HDD, a single DIMM slot...Try reaching inside
to change the RAM...you'll literally have to open the whole darned box to
do so. Try upgrading the box -- you'll find how severely limited your
options are! It is a machine straight out of Hardware Hell...an upgrader's
nightmare..
I suggest that if you really want to play with Linux, stay away from
"Branded" systems unless they give you all the docs and/or mention that
their systems are totally compatible with Linux...in a way it is always a
better idea to build your own system, and make sure that each piece of h/w
and s/w will work properly and will not screw up you Linux setup.
The situation faced by you repesent the strongest reason to support OSS ie.
to ensure that you are not trapped by a lack of choice.
Cheers,
--Indra.
PS. Just a small point --
> computers should be easy to use for the laymen
Tch! Tch! Its "laypersons"....we can't afford to be politically incorrect
on this list ;D
