Throw Away Windows? When -- and Whether -- to Switch to Linux

Berst Alert
Jesse Berst, Editorial Director
ZDNet AnchorDesk
Wednesday, August 11, 1999
For years, I've warned you to be cautious about Linux.
To wait for pioneers to blaze the trails and settle the
hostile territories. To wait until it was safe, in other
words.
That time has arrived.
Sort of.
Linux is the underdog open source operating system nipping
at the heels of Windows NT. At Spring Comdex, its creator
Linus Torvalds proclaimed the Unix variant would crush
Microsoft. Click for more. Hardly. But a few Linux territories
have been civilized enough for your exploration.
Now I'm not counseling you to blindly switch your OS.
There are many situations where Unix or Windows NT are
still better options. But in some situations, Linux makes
sense. We're a far cry from a year ago when I was telling
you it was politically and technically dangerous to even
consider Linux. Click for more. Here's my take on when
and whether Linux makes sense:
High-end production servers: For some Web sites, Linux
plus the Apache servers is a great choice. And server
heavyweights such as IBM and SGI have become big Linux
backers. Click for more.
Departmental servers: NT still gets the nod if you need
a general workhorse. But for a dedicated server -- say,
for file and print sharing -- Linux is a viable solution.
Workstation/desktops: Although VA Linux Systems, Dell,
Corel and others are making headway, don't put Linux on
you desktop machine unless you're a gearhead. Click for
more.
So what's changed? Why am I finally endorsing Linux as
a business solution? Go to Page 2 for specific examples,
but quickly here's where Linux has made giant strides
in gaining mainstream acceptance:
More industry support. Click for more.
More technical support. Click for more.
More applications. Click for more.
Remember, I'm not saying you should throw out Windows.
Only that these Linux improvements have made it a safer
option when you make your decision.
Hit the TalkBack button to give me your Linux prognosis
and what it would take to make you switch. I'll post responses
beneath this article. Or go to my Berst Alerts forum where
a discussion is underway. And don't forget to go to Page
2 for my LinuxWorld roundup.

Expect a flurry of product announcements and trend stories
out of this week's LinuxWorld Expo. Among the ones that
caught my eye:
Grove: Linux Will Crank on Merced
Intel Chairman Andy Grove made a surprise appearance at
the expo Tuesday and demonstrated the Linux kernel running
on top of the Merced simulator. Merced is Intel's first
64-bit processor, which Grove labeled "the future engine
for ecommerce." Click for more.
VA to Ship Sub-$1,000 Linux PC
Linux on the desktop isn't exactly commonplace today,
but VA Linux Systems believes it will be some day. It's
aiming the computer, which comes with a 400 MHz processor
and bundle of Linux apps including a Red Hat-based OS,
at a budget-minded college crowd. Click for more
Linux for CEOs
If you're having trouble persuading the brass to go with
Linux, send them to a free seminar. Several Linux vendors
teamed on an e-seminar series for CEOs and CIOs titled:
"Linux -- So What?" Click for more.
LinuxCare to Offer Web Site Support
The Linux support organization will launch a redesigned
Web site featuring help for builders configuring Linux
systems. A configurator will tell a system builder whether
a potential combination of drives, interface cards and
other components will work as expected with the open source
OS. Click for more.
Red Hat Software IPO Price Range is Raised
We told you earlier this week that Linux vendor Red Hat
Software will celebrate LinuxWorld week with an IPO --
and that other Linux entities are expected to follow suit.
Since then, the price range for the IPO of six million
shares has been raised to $12-$14 per share, going against
the recent trend of postponed or reduced offerings. Click
for more.
