Well ! I just got a ton os messages from all over
! I might add that inspite
of what inklings of possible horror stories I have
heard, I have just finished
installing RH 6 from the CHIP CD and it was a
breeze.

First the points which made me happy......

#1. The new install [ Kernel 2.2.2 -1.5 ] happily
detected my SCSI Card and
Drive ! So now I will need some help in getting
the CD Burner up and running in
Linux.... Anyone using a Burner in Linux yet ?
Also Kernel 2.3.5. STILL rapes me & my boxen !
Some one please give me a
stable 2.3.x kernel !!!

#2. The standard RH install required no more than
a few presses of the Enter
Key to get things going .... Good news for all the
newbies ! Maybe we should
have a section on "How to install Linux...." in
our upcoming event !

#3. RH 6 came with 'switchdesk' which now allows
me to smoothly swith between
KDE, GNOME & Afterstep

#4. NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR 4.51 is a LOT les buggy
and is real smooth !

Now for the rotten parts ! Thus this needs a
concerted effort from the gurus in
the list... :-)

#1. The built in sops which come with the PCQ
installs like the extra aliases
for the DOS users are not there. So one must dip
into the '.bashrc' This made
me realize how addicted I was to the colour code
'ls' outputs.... ! It still
reminds me of 4DOS & Ndos !

#2. Gnome + Enlightenment comes as the
defaults..... Thus KDE works just fine
but the CD and Floppy Icons have disappeared
vis-a-vis my earlier install(s) .
Lazy as I am, I do like the prospect of mounting 7
unmounting my CDs & Floppies
with a few Mouse Clicks ... ! HELP ! How do I get
them back ????!!!!! I have
forgotten !

#3. I have gotten my boxen to mount my Win98
Partition, Linux Partition, Swap,
CD & Flp from /etc/fstab but how do I mount my
SCSI Drive ? Is it /dev/sr0 or
is it /dev/scsi0 ? Do I have to specofy
ISO96....... like my Creative IDE Drive
in the fstab ?

#4. My BAD experience with the 'Update' feature of
the RH 6.0 Distro should be
a lesson to all those who intend to do the
same...... It actually bloats a
437Mb Install to over 900 Mb as it REFUSES to get
rid of ( and hence
update...) the older stuff ! Thus I now have
repartitioned and reinstalled
Linux after a nice reformat !

Hence I volunteer to write for the 'Newbie
Section' of our site where First
Time Users and Green Horns should find a detailed
accounts of how to walk thr'
stuff like upgrading their kernel, installing and
upgrading their existing or
to-be-existing boxens..... I realized that what
seems 'easy' to ppl like us who
have been at it since kernel 1.x is NOTHING like
that to others !

Indra ! Are to listening ?

#5. Star Office AND Wp informs me that they will
works well ( i.e. fully)
ONLY for 30 days ! Shit ! Here we go again !
Compared to them Siag is more peaceful !

In conclusion I declare that the CHIP double CD
Collection is worth it
especially since it comes with a WHOLE suite of
Stuff ! I have repeatedly
reinstalled using a bootdisk AND booting of the CD
from both the CHIP normal CD
AND the Linux Special CD and have got similar
results.... I concluded that the
CHIP ppl have merely given a copy of the same RH
6.0 albeit without the
familiar and (normally) kick ass PCQ Scripts.....
It seems to me that the
CHIP team possesses VERY little experience of the
'latest' ,'rave thing' in the
Linux scene called RH and will slowly mature in a
few years to provide better
support .... But till then all I can say is that
the Double CD is a good buy,
but if u r going to buy the Mag this month for the
RH 6 on it....
FORGET IT ! Wait for the PCQ release !
