There are some drivers available for PCI sound cards in the main tree and some
are closed commercial ones like SB Live.
The latest 2.3.xx kernel has ISA PnP feature in the kernel itself so you donot
need extra utilities for it anymore. I donot know the details, 'will try to
post as and when I get them.
