Getting back the root passwd as in retrieving it, well there is no way to
do this. And with good reasons, it goes against the very idea of security
of your system.
Unless your lilo is screwed up, doing as Rajat suggested -- 'linux
single' at the lilo prompt will also get you there.
But coming back to your question, build the boot floppy using the same set
of resources you used to install Linux on the said machine.
