hey guys,
i suppose we are deviating from our main aim - Linux and getting unnecessarily
entangled in admin issues.
for the knowledge of all ppl, collecting the amount reqd for the domain name
registration, we had to literally go from door to door, and the whole process of
collecting 3300/- (approx), took almost a month, and that too, not everyone
contributed. and had it not been for jpm, we would have been in bad trouble for
not being able to pay the necessary amount in time. but if we had collected some
sort of fees, such a situation could be handled much more easily. it is not
always necessary that we may find sponsorship, or some means thru which to get
such monetory jobs done fast, at the reqd times.
about the spcl discount, i think that we are demanding a bit too much from the
dealer when we say that he/she should give huge discounts to everyone, for
Linux/OSS books. so according to the mentioned "the philosophy of Linux/OSS",
they should be distributing the books for free ! my suggestion is that we should
approach the book shop and ask the owner how s/he wants to deal with this, as
after all, the headache is going to be hers.
say what ?

I donot understand this after reading the other mails in this thread. Let me
explain:
Becoming a member of LUG should be free. That has been the philosophy of
Linux/OSS. Anybody can join and leave it at his will after serving his
responsibilities. If you start taking annual membership fees (be it Rs 10),
you will loose members not because of money but because of politics and this
is espacially true in Bengal. (Note: money for refreshments is different thing,
not fees).
The above implies everybody should be able to get discounts on books if the
bookshop is giving one. You cannot separate out the people who are members
from ones who are not. The logistics will not be easy as has been pointed out
in another mail.
My solution: why don't you persuade this bookshop to give discounts on
Linux/OSS books to everybody LUG member or not. By this we will have more
people moving to Linux and overall it will have more of an equalizing effect
instead of separating people into groups.
