I think i know what the problem is. I have seen this before . You see, when
you do a linux only install, Linux gets installed on more than 1 primary
partition. Let me explain. Normally , given a chance, the swap partition is
on a PRIMARY partition. Now, dos FDISK chokes on a partition table which has
more than 1 primary partition. The situation has gone from bad to worse
recently. Win98SE is the worst . FDISK in recent versions, Simply ignores
non-dos partitions and DOES NOT even show them in a partition list. ( you
CANNOT delete them from dos fdisk in win98SE/Win98) THIS is why, win98 can
overwrite Linux if you install it later, though it does not always happen ,
due to several caveats.Since Linux takes up around 2 primary partitions at
least, This problem persists. The only way to get around this is to use a
NON-DOS fdisk to partition your Disk.Remember, all M$ OSes require a Primary
partition to be marked Active , with at least fat16 before they will boot.
So create a primary Dos partition using linux fdisk - NOT disk druid as i
consider it another brain dead invention more at home in a M$/Mac world and
install win9x there. However, The one guaranteed problem here is that win9x
Will overwrite your MBR, and Lilo in the bargain and so , keep Loadlin
handy.
