The most important lesson was perhaps that presentations have to be fairly
fast-paced... for most people OS theory is not likely to hold
attention span for long...
The presentations have to be packaged attractively... sloppily
designed transparencies or sketch done at the last minute won't do.
Do not put on stage speakers whose public speaking capabilities are not
proven (there is a big difference between addressing 15 - 20 people at one
of our meetings and addressing a 150+ audience while standing under the
glare of stage lights)
While demoing any product do not linger too on telling the audience abt
it, instead explain its features while demoing the product.
Keep a strong set of speakers at hand for an open session with the
audience, to answer questions and interact with the audience.
Have a registration desk at the entrance, and prepare some sort
of brochure/handout to be given out after people have registered.
Regarding sponsors, we should have a clear line w.r.t how much
the sponsors can advertise their service using our platform... although it
didn't work out finally as we didn't need the funds, RS Software wanted us
to reproduce their corporate brochure on our sponsor page... after a
lenght of bargaining finally RS relented and agreed to be satisfied
with whatever was fitting with our LUG policy).
We also need to have a media cell to get the local media involved & cover
the event. The Telegraph had promised me to cover LI-99, unfortunately the
devastating fire took place at ABP on the 3rd Sept, 1999. We could have
taken out ads for free if we had approached the earlier.
