I tried out both the solutions and found them working.

However, the users that I have were working from windows PCs using samba.
I had to insert the following lines for the corresponding share in the
smb.conf file to get the desired result.
    create mode = 0777
    directory mode = 0777
    locking = yes

P.S.
My aim is to replace the existing NetWare server with Linux/samba for file
and print services in office.  Shall let you know when I am successful.
However it seems I have a long way to go and need to have hands-on
experience in log on samba scripts, printer sharing, back-ups etc. before I
can really attempt that.
Any suggestions/ references to good URLs is most welcome.
