  I think you answer you own question.  Coding is not the entire story:
what you are coding, the freedoms associated with it, and the rewards (not
just money) are extremely important.  I am a hacker and I code to get
computers to do cool things.  I would never code in a large company where
the beurocracy separates me from any real input into what I am writing.
