Hmmm! Now since you ARE on a network, here is something that
you could do to back up the ENTIRE HDD.

#1. Get another machine with another 17Gb HDD (or bigger if
possible.... 38Gb IDE IBM HDDs are going for only 4k more
than our prices of 17Gb ones here... in S'pore (SimLim
Square).. So if u have someone coming down...)

#2. Connect it to the network and mount the
new/borrowed/stolen HDD so that you can access it.

#3. Assuming that the ailing HDD is @ /dev/hdxn (/dev/sdxn
if SCSI ) and say the new Drive is mounted @ /root/GimmeSome
issue a

'dd if=/dev/hdxn of=/root/GimmeSome/bakup.img'

#4. Now the bakup.img should be enough to get a spitting
image of your Sayonara-Symptom wala HDD. ( Just do a 'dd
if=/root/GimmeSome/bakup.img of=/dev/hdyn' where /dev/hdyn
is your replacement/new HDD/Partition.

Just curious ... But how on earth do you know that the HEAD
is damaged ?Did you open the HDD while it was working and
see the head limping along ?

I need this info since I was trying to get a Seagate 31621A
(lying open on my desk as I type this, with motionless heads
:( ) to work with a Connor Periperals Circuit Board and the
servo motor isn't getting juice... So I would love to have
any software that pinpointed this thingy...

Every thing in *NIX is a 'file' so mount any Win9x/NT
Partition and transfer the damned things you need (provided
you are wallowing in plenty of HDD space) and burn 'em....

Will try and explain how to get the HP CDWriter of yours up
and running in Linux if need be ... the cdrecord RPM is in
your Rh CDs... Their web site has lotsa links to this sort
of stuff... and in anycase Rajarshi has also used a CDWriter
in Linux and his knowhow would will be useful too...

Bon Voyage
