Hi folks,
Well let me put it straight... :-)
Connecting to the net with a Caltiger free account IS POSSIBLE with Linux --
and I have been doing just that since March end.
Trust me I haven't even downloaded the freeinstaller !! My home networks
connects to the net via my Linux box and I have no plan to try something
else just because the ISP wants me to do so *-)
Now the tech stuff (standard disclaimer applies):
This worked for me using ppp(the one in stock with distro) with Redhat
6.1/6.2, Mandrake 6.1/7.0 (I didn't find time to try in other distros, but
they should be as easy).
--> Fire linuxconf and make a new ppp iface (say ppp0)
--> The file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0 thus crated in
previous step should look something like this:
--------------------------------------------------
'ABORT' 'BUSY'
'ABORT' 'ERROR'
'ABORT' 'NO CARRIER'
'ABORT' 'NO DIALTONE'
'ABORT' 'Invalid Login'
'ABORT' 'Login incorrect'
'' 'ATZ'
'OK' 'ATDP172378'
'CONNECT' ''
'name:' 'indrajit'
'word:' 'password'
'TIMEOUT' '5'
'~--' ''
--------------------------------------------------
--> The file /etc/ppp/options should contain:
--------------------------------------------------
lock
defaultroute
noipdefault
--------------------------------------------------
And the other stuff:
Caltiger uses Trux64 on DEC/Compaq Alpha for user authentication through
vanilla chat script (similar to what VSNL does) and the entire mechanism is
quite Open (architecture-wise). Gurus will tell us that the authenticating
server has no intelligence (at least apparently) to understand whether an
application like Adbar (nothing but a substitute for standard windows
dialer, I guess) is talking to it for authentication. So Adbar or no Adbar,
connection/handshake will be through.
However, had they used Windows NT, story could have been different (since in
NT there are readily available tricks at server side to check/poll whether
Adbar is running). Fortunately, they aren't doing so. (Afterall, they are
sane people and don't want to see their business go haywire). I don't claim
this won't be possible with Unix, but it will be more involved. And now
that Caltiger have gone into operation, they can't afford to try that as
that will mean further downtime/starting troubles and probably they'll have
to rewrite the Adbar stuff.
Although I didn't try myself, but going by the same argument, I guess
connecting to Caltiger should be possible using Windows too without using
their Adbar.
So brave men, relax, you have it now, more sleepless nights thanks to
Caltiger !!
<kidding>And, oh yes, no more sniffing COM2</kidding>
Note:
If this is anything less than comprehensible, its because I am very poor at
documenting technical stuff. -- my apologies. :-)
For curious eyes, check out the header of this mail. (The signature will
tell you the SMTP is sendmail, and the IP address will tell you its from
caltiger's 202.86. block)
Wishes,
the 'other' Indra
