Dear Sudip,
I am speaking after a long time; especially when I am not in the city.
However, I would like to speak a few words on the suggestion that you have
made.
In the first place, let me tell you, these tutorials are really
worthless. If you have to learn it, then YOU shall have do it yourself : the
best way to learn to swim is by swimming itself !! Yes, Goa has started it,
and let them go ahead. What I shall suggest is the following : instead of such
tutorials, let the LUG meet, and then the problem shall be solved.
Let me tell you how. When ILUG-Cal was started, a few of us used to meet
once every fortnight; we would have had our problems solved on the platform of
the meet, and if there were no problems, some one of us (mostly it was Indra,
Arup, Darshan and Shankar, and by this I do not demean others who have said or
did not say) used to say what he has done. Did we all listen ? Did we all get
benefitted ? The answer to the first is NO; to the second is YES. And how ? We
usually do not listen unless WE OURSELVES are in a problem; and why were we
benefitted : we came to know which person knows which one of the stuff, so
that when, if at all, we shall be in any problem who shall be of help to us.
The list moderator Indra has a role to direct the enquiries to the correct
person, but knowing the person face-to-face is, in my opinion, a much better
alternative.
Thus if the meet starts again, then you may as well come and join the
meets, get to know the people, and get to solve your problems. In fact, what
could be better is to develop upon the resource library that we had been
harping on for quite some time. And if you do not come to the meet, Indra does
a good job of accounting the minutes : he used to do it, and although he is
VERY BUSY now, I know he would be doing it, not by choice but perforce.
To Indra : let us take this query as a lead and start our meets once more,
again, if not fortnightly, due to exceedingly high work pressures, at least
monthly, and then, for a longer time. Hope you shall find out the way.
