Hi all, Of late there has been a tremendous show of interest and enthusiasm from the members. This is absolutely fantastic. First off, I want to thank Saugata and all the other members who have come forward for the Linux CD distribution effort.
However, certain incidents have taken place of late which bodes ill w.r.t our beloved LUG's future unless addressed to immediately. Please remember that this is a public list and every mail we send to it is accessible from a public archive (www.yahoogroups.com/group/ilug-cal/). Therefore any discussion on list about cracking, warez and any activity of questionable motives are *strictly prohibited*. Yet a couple of days back Saugata's posting on the list about the warez CDs he has sent to Abhijit Bhattacharya for duplication and distribution was a clear violation of our list policies. This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I am quite sure that Saugata had meant no harm, but his enthusiam carried him over the line that (for that matter anybody) should not have crossed. Inspite of Saugata's generous contribution, this act cannot be condoned for more than one reason. We have to realise that if we wish GPL or any other open source licenses to be recognised and given their due respect, we in turn have to respect any proprietory license however user unfriendly the terms may be. We have to realise that any slur cast on Linux users as software pirates strikes at the very foundation of our collective credibility and respectibility. <warning> Any future repeatation like this and I promise I shall take the entire list offline. ILUG-CAL shall under no condition be a via media for software piracy. </warning> Another unpleasant incident has been Malay-da's (Mr Malay Mitra from Tata Tea) departure from the list. He has, IMHO quite rightly, taken serious objection to the entirely unnecessary and unpleasant twist put upon his words. For those who doesn't know him, he was one of the founder-members of ILUG-Cal. A man of impeccable integrity, Malay-da has been associated with corporate computing on unix since its arrival in the country. He is quite correctly acknowledged as one of the foremost Unix/Linux guru in Calcutta. He continues to be a LUG member but we shall miss him on the list. Those of you who are on the linux-india list should know very well how many knowledgable (and very helpful) members have left that list because of unthinking postings and needless personal bashing. I honestly feel we should all stop for a moment and ponder about our actions.... --The ListAdmin -- To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the body "unsubscribe ilug-cal" and an empty subject line.
