Hi, firstly i have no answer as to what people might think on the OT issue. the thread started off as linux in schools initiative and now has thrown up so many different aspects and quite rightly can really be discussed threadbare at a LUG meet. but keeping in mind that indranil hasn't yet rapped me on the knuckles, let me spin some more yarn.
ML is on the ball when he says about the IT schools and their assembly line products. but the point is whether software is a services sector or a industry sector. last time i checked a survey, software services contributed way too much to the GDP. unhealthy trend no doubt but there you are. the next thing to consider is what is the s/w industry. the media keeps on harping and hyping of ASPs and thus the so called schools turn out or churn out people who are just that AS providers. original thought initiation and innovativeness is not their menu item. then comes the question - why do schools install macs and implement networks ? in most cases, in kolkata at least, that gives a very hip and swank outlook to the inst. [sayan, sayamindu pls excuse - this is something you might object to]. with ad-hoc IT policy [if any] and no clear vision, the teaching of comp attains the same level as those taught in the IT schools. Sayan talks about self study. this is good and bad. good because it is the best way to attain an insight into the workings of a system. bad because how many do indulge in it ? like it or not, we all need a slight bit of cane wielding to keep us in line. let to rope loose and the cow does a runner !! RAD programming absorbs the product of these schools while techies do the hard core development - thus all we get is a vicious circle. and then it starts all over again. as for the question as to how to break out of this - frankly speaking i really don't have any solutions thereon. warm regards and thanks for such free wheeling thoughts sankarshan --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
