Flame? No question. But writing open source code needs no more knowledge than writing propietary code! Only, its good to be aware that there are other ways, some of which might sometimes let you do your work more easily. If you do wish to try out the command line stuff, I'd suggest "The Unix Programming Environment" by Kernighan & Pike as a good starting point (despite it being 20+ years old).
