excerpt from close to the top of 2.4.4 Documentation/modules.txt file:

* * * NOTE * * *
The kernel has been changed to remove kerneld support and use
the new kmod support. Keep this in mind when reading this file. Kmod
does the exact same thing as kerneld, but doesn't require an external
program (see Documentation/kmod.txt)

---------------
you probably have kmod turned on right now.

have you kernel compiled before?

they make it out to be some serious intellectual challange - actually
its as easy as poking at 'y' or 'n' a few times while falling asleep -
thats sys admins for you.
